Senorik Tsateryan was shot in the hand by an Azerbaijani soldier while patrolling the line of contact in 1997, in violation of the ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia. In 2002, he was mostly blinded when he stepped on a landmine in the Fizuli region.
