The territory of Nagorno-Karabakh lies in a mountainous region between the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia. Its status has been in dispute since the two countries fought a war over it in the early 1990s. While it is legally part of Azerbaijan, it is occupied by Armenia and considers itself an independent country. Despite declaring a ceasefire in 1994, hundreds of thousands of people remain displaced and live as refugees fifteen years on.
