In the wake of the January 2010 earthquake, sexual assaults in the camps for the displaced have skyrocketed. Many girls and women have ended up in insecure living arrangements and tight quarters with strangers, while many fathers, husbands, and brothers died. All of these girls live in a camp on Champs de Mars, a park directly across from the National Palace. It is one of approximately 1,300 throughout the city, and is one of the most ad-hoc and cramped.
